The Chairman

ABOUT

A deep listener, a sonic storyteller, a cartographer of sound and space Muhammad Dawjee, brings his avant-garde musical explorations to The Chairman as part of the Concerts SA Series. This performance promises to be both intimate and expansive, a sonic journey through jazz, memory, and improvisation.

Hailing from the racially designated Indian* apartheid group-area of Laudium, Pretoria, Muhammad’s work unearths histories of migration, subjugation, and liberation through the language of sound. His music is a meditation on identity, place, and memory, blending jazz traditions with experimental soundscapes that stretch the boundaries of genre and form.

With a background that includes collaborations with legends like Dr. Abdullah Ibrahim, Andile Yenana, Herbie Tsoaeli, and Mandla Mlangeni, and as a co-founder of Kinsmen and longtime member of iPhupho L’ka Biko, Muhammad’s sonic vocabulary is rooted in both the past and the yet-to-be-imagined future. His work has traveled from Johannesburg to Berlin, from the Jukskei River headwaters to the Camissa River, always in search of what sound can reveal about the worlds we inhabit.

Performing alongside Dalisu Ndlazi (upright bass) and Siphiwe Shiburi (drum kit), Dawjee Trio brings an evening of music that listens as much as it speaks—one that will make you hear the familiar in unfamiliar ways.
