ABOUT

The Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape is proud to partner with Jazz in the Native Yards and the Jazz Train to welcome Paul Hanmer, pianist and son of Cape Town to celebrate the release of the double vinyl edition of Trains to Taung. Hanmer’s musical compositions thread together the notes that may yet provide us with the sensory awakening to live through turbulent times. Shaping and summoning the sonic worlds that lie behind the experience of violence and conquest, Trains to Taung reminds us of journey’s travelled and journey’s that lie ahead in our search for freedom. In it we will discover resonant echoes of what it will mean to make a future, to build it amidst the ruins and decay of a crumbling old order. Join us in the experience of a taste of freedom as we celebrate the music of Paul Hanmer for three days of conversation, composition, and music memory to welcome the arrival of Trains to Taung. Join us at the CHR’s Iyatsiba Lab in Woodstock, Greatmore Street, on 7 February at 6:00 pm for a conversation with Paul Hanmer and the CHR’s Lindelwa Dalamba and Reza Khota
