Turffontein Racecourse

ABOUT

Celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend by joining us for a day at the Turffontein Racecourse.

Before the City of Gold had any clubs or theatres, residents of the mining camp entertained themselves by organising horse races and betting on the outcome.

Join us as we weave the story of Johannesburg through the history of Turffontein Racecourse, from the Turf Club's first president (Carl von Brandis) to famous horses such as Wolf Power, Aquanaut, Caradoc and Furious.

Along the way, we’ll hear about the young men who filled the trams from the city centre to Turffontein in search of entertainment. We’ll also find out more about members of Joburg’s High Society who went to the track to see and be seen. And we’ll discuss Lord Kitchener and the thousands of Boer women and children who were interned at the Turffontein Concentration Camp.

After the tour, we will be having lunch at the Furious Coffee Shop and viewing the London News Stakes races from the grandstand. You are welcome to join us as we view the horses in full stride, order some lunch and take a bet on the races. (Light lunch, drinks and bets at own cost.)

Please note: We will be entering the parade ground where a strict dress code is enforced. No shorts, no flip flops or sleeveless shirts. Dress code also applies to the restaurant. Best dressed couple wins a pair of tickets to an upcoming JHF tour.

This is a walking tour that covers a distance of 2-3kms. Wear comfortable walking shoes, hats for the sun and dress smartly.

Parking is available at the Jockey Club grass parking. Turn right after entering the main gate. We are parking on the grass alongside the race track. Tell the security guard that you are there for the heritage tour.
