ABOUT
"Umcimbi" is a Xhosa word that refers to a traditional ceremony specific to the Xhosa people.
This initiative aims to reimagine folk music—such as umombelo, amagwijo, and amahubo—through the lens of South African Jazz (SA Jazz). In this context, SA Jazz serves as a gateway for expressing cultural sensibilities. This work unfolds as an innovative approach that uses music as a point of reference to explore the histories and identities of the Bantu people.
The bandstand acts as a communal ethnographic platform that invites everyone to participate in music-making. Overall, this practice is experimental, allowing for the performance of new meanings and interpretations.
