Introducing Avzal Ismail
Avzal is an internationally recognized South African pianist and educator, celebrated for his expertise in jazz and Latin jazz, while also proficient in various other genres.
With decades of experience, he has performed in 36 countries, including cities like Beijing, London, and Vancouver.
He founded the award-nominated group Rush Hour and was a key member of LIGHT YEARS, which opened for notable bands such as Shakatak and John McLaughlin.
Avzal is esteemed in the music industry for both his performance and educational contributions, having lectured in jazz studies at TUT for 12 years, mentoring many emerging musicians.
His accolades include winning the 2020 BV&SM award for Jazz Pianist and directing the house band for the Johannesburg Arts Alive Festival. Avzal also collaborates with top musicians globally, particularly from the USA, Canada, and the UK. Currently, he is focusing on new projects and album production while serving on the editorial staff of Smooth Jazz Magazine.
Casks and Chords II runs from 22 January - 26 March at The Queen's Lounge in the V&A Waterfront. Weekly jazz shows on Wednesday nights. Casks and Chords is curated and managed by Nick Ford.
