ABOUT
Born to Jazz musician, Ntshoko, in Rondebosch and Langa, Kanu Ntshoko developed a fervent love for music at a young age, stemming from a heritage deeply entrenched in musical craftsmanship. From the tender age of six, as a self-taught instrumentalist, he actively participated in musical performances alongside his uncles and fellow musicians, captivating local audiences and leaving a lasting impact. These foundational experiences profoundly shaped his musical journey, propelling him to compose original pieces and exhibit his talents at various local events during his adolescent years.
Upon embarking on his formal education, he deliberately chose to join the orchestra, where he delved into music theory classes offered by UNISA. Throughout his school years, he led a jazz ensemble known as the "4th Note,"gracing numerous venues and occasions in Cape Town, thereby accumulating invaluable experience while reveling in the sheer delight of music.
Transitioning towards honing his professional career, he found fulfillment in performing at upscale clubs and bars. Nonetheless, cognizant of the impermanent nature of such venues, he harbored aspirations for a breakthrough, akin to many other musicians striving to leave a lasting imprint on the industry.
Originating from Cape Town, the accomplished music director, drummer, and instrumentalist has been mentored by and collaborated with some of South Africa's distinguished jazz icons, including Dr. Tete Mbambisa, Victor Ntoni, Dorothy Masuka, Abigail Khubeka, Ezra & Duke Ngcukane, Cat Stevens (USA), Louis Moholo, Ernest Dawkins (USA) Hilton Schilder, among others.
Embarking on international tours, Ntshoko's rhythmic expertise, soulful vocals, and poignant lyrical compositions swiftly garnered a devoted following. His musical style transcends traditional jazz boundaries, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as African indigenous melodies and global music influences. This harmonious amalgamation results in a distinctive sonic tapestry that enthralls and transports his audience, his commanding presence on stage resonating deeply within the hearts and souls of listeners.
From his early twenties, Kanu initiated the recording of demos, pausing this creative pursuit for an extended period while immersing himself in educational roles within various academic institutions. However, following a hiatus, he resolved to return to the limelight, embarking on collaborations with musicians worldwide to further enrich his musical odyssey.
