ABOUT

Destination Unknown is a stretch music collective exploring the convergence of tradition, culture; history, and identity through the lens of young musicians navigating the intersections between culture, heritage, and modernity. 

Started by the Johannesburg-based, East London duo, Athamacwera, Athi Ngcaba, and Zolani Rafuza. The cross-genre exploration through improvised sound looks into sonically carving a path to the 'Unknown'; as a place of familiarity. The collective draws its sound from contemporary jazz, drum and bass, grunge, electro-house, Lo-Fi, and Indie folk genres. 

This is an invitation to the exploration of redefining creative spaces, a facilitation of a deeper listening to live music, and exploring its relevance; whilst pushing the boundaries of what constitutes and is understood as a space and valid expression. 

Since its inception the collective has performed across the country, making appearances in East London, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Karoo; with their most notable performance at the 50th Anniversary of the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, alongside IBHUNGA, The Council.
