RODRIGUEZ; THE MAN – THE MUSIC
(Real name Jesus Sixto (pronounced Sees-too) Diaz-Rodriguez)
(10 July 1942 – 8 August 2023)
Rodriguez changed the lives of a lot of kids in the 70s. Cold Fact was the go to album for some comfort and escape in the tumultuous and heavily authoritarian place that was South Africa at the time. He sold more records here than Elvis. He was bigger than the Rolling Stones, whereas back home in Detroit he was barely known. His story was documented in Searching For Sugarman, a movie put together by South Africans Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholemew (directed by the late Malik Bendjelloul) which won a BAFTA award for best documentary. He performed in South Africa more than 30 times between 1998 and the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
Paying tribute to him tonight are 3 different acts from Cape Town South Africa, each of whom give their take on how his music influenced them.
They are James Kibby, Roy Kassel, and duo Flip Squad.
