Modern bonding, cementation and core build up techniques for everyday dentistry

ABOUT
About Dr Christiaan Victor:
Dr Christiaan Victor completed his undergraduate degree (BChD) at the University of Pretoria (UP) in June 2001. During his final year, he was selected to participate as an exchange student to the Dental school of the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
Currently, he is based full time at his private practice in Pretoria where he has practiced since 2002 after completing his community service. Specializing in endodontics, implant treatments and prosthetic rehabilitations.
In 2004, Dr Victor got involved in implant dentistry and attended several local and international implant courses. Among others, he completed a two-year certificate with Prof. Andre van Zyl at UP in 2013, an advanced one-year course in 2015 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Implantology (cum laude) in 2016.
The knowledge he gained about implantology led him to develop a keen interest in Endodontology. As an
understudy of Prof. Peet van der Vyver, he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontology (cum laude) in 2017. Most recently in 2020 he completed his Master’s (MSc) degree in Endodontics at UP, which he passed with distinction.
Currently he is a member of Study Group 1, South African Association of Aesthetic dentistry (SAAAD),
SADA, Endodontic society of SA and Key Opinion leader for Henry Schein and GC South Africa.
Objectives:
The three main objectives of the day are to look at new and current bonding strategies, secondly at the different options that we have to cement indirect restorations (ie. Crowns, overlays and inlays). Lastly to discuss all the new materials and considerations in core build up techniques.
All delegates will have the chance to work with the latest GC products during a hands-on session.
1. Bonding
Bonding to the various substrates will be discussed: Enamel and Dentin.
The factors that influence the strength and durability of the bond and hybrid layer.
Armamentarium required to produce predictable outcomes.
The generations of bonding systems (from the first to latest 8th generation) – pro’s and con’s
What is IDS (immediate dentin sealing), and what is the benefits thereof?
Stepwise procedures to ensure cost effective everyday bonding in general practice.
We will specifically discuss GC G-Premio BOND and G2-BOND and the difference.
Also how to complete a direct composite restoration with G-ænial A'CHORD and G-ænial Universal Injectable.
2. Cementation
Cementation of indirect restorations and the way we bond or cement them is not always a one size fits all
situation.
Using modern bonding techniques, we are able to very predictably bond restorations that has low or no
mechanical retention at all.
We will discuss in detail all the various substrates that we have to deal with (tooth and restoration material).
How to attach indirect zirconia, metal, composite and ceramics to tooth structure and how various factors
influence our decision-making process.
Alternatives like Glass-Ionomer cements and their indications will also be discussed and how an all-round
universal self-adhesive resin cement – G-CEM ONE is a game changer.
3. Core build up
The main objective of this part is to look at the way that a short fibre re-enforced material like GC everX
Flow has changed the landscape of tooth core re-enforcement (for direct restorations) and conventional
core build ups for endodontically treated teeth. Cavity preparation optimization for minimal invasive
biomimetic preparations.
When and how fibre post strengthening is still indicated for endodontically treated teeth and how to
incorporate GC Gradia-core build up material.
4. Hands-on session
Depending on the availability of materials and hands-on equipment, delegates will be able to use GC
products to practice some or all of the following
I - Complete a two-surface filling
II - Preparation of minimal invasive overlay, manufacture indirect restoration and cementation
In conclusion the delegate will have a much better understanding of the way bonding has influenced the way we do our direct restorations, cement indirect restorations and what the alternatives would be for more conventional cementation. Should the tooth be severely damaged or underwent endodontic treatment, the delegate will have a better understanding of core strengthening and build up.
