ABOUT

ANOTHER NIGHT IN THE SLAVE CHURCH

Derek Gripper - Music from the Strings of Mali

In 2012, after releasing nine albums of original music, Cape Town guitarist Derek Gripper crowdfunded an album to record his latest project: the translation of the kora compositions of Malian virtuoso Toumani Diabate. The kora is a twenty-one string instrument played by the hereditary musicians of West Africa, and its twenty-one strings produce a seemingly impossible complexity which one would imagine would be impossible to reproduce on guitar.

Derek’s album, “One Night on Earth” managed to do it and has been received with massive praise by classical musicians like John Williams who invited him to perform a series of concert with him, international publications such as Songlines Magazine  which selected the album as a Top of the World album in 2013, as well as invites to play in concert halls and festivals all over the world, not least being a solo show at Carnegie Hall last November. But the most surprising accolade was from the composer himself: Toumani Diabate finally heard the album four years after its release and immediately invited Derek to perform with him in Bamako, Mali, saying that he couldn't believe it was only one guitar playing.

One Night on Earth was launched at a thank you concert at the Slave Church, a thank you to the people who funded the recording, and a thank you to all the people who downloaded the album and chose to pay for it even though it was offered for “any price even zero.”

And now Derek’s follow up record, “Libraries on Fire,” has been nominated by Songlines as “Best Album Africa and Middle East,” with the announcement out on the 11th of May this year.

So to mark this event Derek will return to the Slave Church on the 12th of May for his first solo concert there since “One Night on Earth’s” launch.
