Shankar's Malaysian Tamil Sappadu in Cape Town
The Experience
Chef Patron Shankar Santhiram helms the critically acclaimed Fire by Shankar restaurant in Penang, Malaysia. Tamil people who migrated from South India form the largest Indian diaspora in Malaysia. Shankar's food is an amalgamation of cuisine from Tamil Nadu, through his extensive travels there, and influenced by his own Tamil family's dining table heritage. Now, he brings his distinctive, and inimitable food to Cape Town for only 3-days. Come join him, and enjoy this cultural culinary experience. He will present a traditional Malaysian-Tamil styled Banana Leaf Meal or "Sappadu" that will tantalise your taste buds.
The meal will include a presentation on the Indian diaspora in Malaysia, and it's similarities with South Africa.
The Sappadu
"Sappadu" is a Tamil word meaning "meal" or "feast." In Tamil cuisine, "sappadu" often refers to a traditional meal served on a banana leaf. It typically includes a variety of dishes from rice, meat or seafood based curries, vegetables, pickles, and sometimes sweets. The experience of "sappadu" goes beyond the food itself. It is a celebration of culture, often shared during special occasions, family gatherings, or festivals, reflecting the rich flavors of Tamil cuisine.
Serving the meal on a banana leaf adds an aromatic element, and truly embodies a complete dining experience that is both deeply nourishing and celebratory.
