ABOUT

Millions of South Africans are exposed to true innovation first hand in townships, affectionately known as eKasi. 

The theme for our May #SCTalk is Tech eKasi. 
 
We aim to highlight innovation in our under-served communities, throwing the spotlight on startups solving township challenge using tech and looking at how we build a truly inclusive ecosystem.

On the panel are:


Vuyisa Qabaka is a tech and small business advisor, as well as lean start-up practitioner and partner at venture builder, Entrepreneur Traction. He holds directorships on various start-up boards, and a nonexecutive director seat at the South African Black Entrepreneurs Forum (SABEF). He has completed a Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) Degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Property Analysis at the University of Cape Town and a Design Thinking in Practice short course from the D-School, at the UCT Business School. Vuyisa is currently studying towards a Certificate in Digital Money through Digital Frontiers.Vuyisa is a regular tech media contributor and has a weekly column in the Business Report, part of the Independent Media Group and the largest English language business publication in South Africa. He also writes a blog on the township economy called Kasi Economics (read more at www.kasieconomics.com) and mentors start-ups in various townships for the Kasi2Kasi initiative


Baratang Miya is a social entrepreneur and a self taught coder, the founder and CEO of Girlhype coding academy for women and girls. For her extraordinary work providing access to technology for women and girls, Baratang was named as one of the top three for the 2016 MTN Women In ICT Community Builder Award. The US State Department has also recognized her commitment to women and girls in STEM, and invited her to spend six weeks in Silicon Valley with other Tech Women award recipients.  Over the years, Baratang has deepened her knowledge and understanding of tech ecosystems which saw her managing CiTi’s Bandwidth Barn located in Khayelitsha, Managed the BlackBerry’s AppsLab in Cape Town, and has also project managed the City of Cape Town’s SmartCity content development strategy.


Bhuti Mbele has over 19 years of experience in IT, specialising in business processes engineering and IT Solutions. He is very passionate about IT and passionate about educating South Africa about it. A member of community forums and professional bodies like AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management), BMF (Business Management Forum) and IITPSA (Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa), he did his final year in MBA (Technology Management) in 2016 with Torrens University of Australia. "I am a father of five beautiful kids, a husband of one beautiful queen, a child of God and a lover of Liverpool FC. I Love God and I believe that He has a major plans for me and I believe He made me for more." he says.


Luvuyo Rani is both a visionary and an award winning entrepreneur.He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, and has a BTech in Business Administration – Business Studies and a B Tech Degree in Commercial Education- Economics.
 He is the director of the award winning Silulo Ulutho Technologies, a Cape Town based IT Services Company with over forty branches. He has received many awards which have generated considerable media exposure.
 For his extraordinary work providing access to technology, he was awarded the KPMG and Cape Times entrepreneur award and named one of the 2014 JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP) recipients in the category of business, economic, and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment.
Awarded as Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2016.


Lebogang Madise is a graduate from Microsoft’s Student to Business program, The AppFactory and certified SCRUM Master. She facilitates mobile tech startups at mLab Southern Africa and leads a lean innovation program, Demola in Cape Town. Lebogang is also continuing with her studies as a part time student at the University Of South Africa, pursuing a degree in Computer Science as well as a certificate in Financial Management. She is a volunteer who has introduced coding to more than 1000 scholars in Gauteng North and Southern Schools and serves as a subcommittee member for  IEEE Region 8 Humanitarian Activities and Women in Engineering Committee

The Pitching Startups are:


Ntsebenziswano "Benzi" Novermber of Discover Ikasi was born in Worceter. He completed his studies in IT he went on to the corporate world and found himself in the call centre industry where he has been working for the past 10 years as a Customer Service Team Manager.
An entrepreneur at heart he always dreamed of one day owning his own company and this led to him resigning from his 9-5 job and founded a company called Indyebo Holdings which was a construction company which worked on a couple of Projects around Cape Town and Eastern Cape. Due to a lack of experience and unfortunate events this business failed.
His never dying spirit and after different attempts in business he Founded another company called DiscoverIkasi and he has not looked back ever since.
This innovative idea helps township businesses such as BnB’s, Restaurants, Tour Operators, Museums and more in the tourism sector across S.A to market their business on the DiscoverIkasi platform.


Itumeleng Mabote, CEO/CTO at Ubutouch, a secure in-home service delivery platform. He is is an electromechanical engineer, with a first class pass from the University of Cape Town and is passionate about using technology to improve life at home. 
"Clean your home; have repairs done and restock your fridge with one touch of a button" they offer. Using their uniquely designed Ubutouch Smart Lock and In-Door Sensor Technology they make it possible for home services to be securely granted access to your home without you needing to be there.

Fernando Antonio (24) lives in Mandalay, Cape Town, and is the brain-child behind the Zakasi Property, a Township-based property platform that allows Township property buyers and sellers in Cape Town to connect.  He describes himself as a “Real Estate Tech Entrepreneur with a passion for entrepreneurship beyond the sheer mechanism of just running a business”.
Antonio holds a Diploma in Business Management, a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Development (from the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development, UCT’s Graduate School of Business) and was recently exempted from his Real Estate qualifications ? the Further Education and Training Certificate [FETC, NQF Level 4] and the National Certificate in Real Estate [NQF Level 5]).
He has been awarded the 2016 Nzulu Recognition Award for Innovative business of the year and has won numerous pitching competitions. 



Ntsako Mgiba is a final year Mechatronics engineering student at the University of Cape Town. He is the CEO at JONGA, a tech start up and social enterprise that operates in the security space in low income communities. They provide a low cost and most importantly community based alert systems for lower to middle income households and small businesses. It consists of an alarm control panel, JONGA unit, and mobile app combo that notify you when someone enters your home and allow you to panic if it is an unexpected visitor. It then sends a panic notification along with your location to all the JONGA app users within the area as well as contacts which you add on your contact list. Its purpose is to allow for real crime reporting and prompting of community watch responses.



We are excited to announce Cape Talk's Kieno Kammies as the moderator of Tech Ekasi. Kieno is the CEO of KKS that concentrates on value proposition creation and market entry strategies. InsureTech, Blockchain technology, drone technologies are some of the tech Kieno is busy developing investments in. His greatest passion which he is in the process of perusing is to develop a business school for school kids, linking them directly to big supply chains. He is currently the anchor of the breakfast show for Cape Talk, and previously hosted SA's biggest independent commercial breakfast show on Jacaranda FM.
