ABOUT THE PARTNERS

Since 2016, GOBELINS has been developing a strong multi-partner network across the African continent, notably in South Africa (Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, The Animation School), Ghana (AnimaxFYB studios), and Benin (Sèmè City). These strong connections are reflected, among other things, by the admission of African students to GOBELINS Paris (21 Netflix scholarship recipients), academic exchanges with The Animation School, the co-construction of professional animation training (Mollo Animation Academy), and the deployment of customised programs (in Ghana, Benin) to meet the training needs of the industry in these countries. GOBELINS Paris (gobelins-school.com)

In 2019, Tshimologong Precinct initiated an animation capacity-building program, Mollo Academy,  targeting emerging talents from disadvantaged backgrounds. For four years, Mollo Academy has offered a rigorous 11-month immersive program designed for recent graduates or self-taught individuals who wish to collaborate on professional-quality animated films under real studio production conditions. The program was developed in partnership with GOBELINS Paris.

Since then, the Academy’s success has prompted the Mollo team to also start a studio space for the production of commercial short and long form animation projects. As a studio, Mollo has since worked with various local and international partners to produce industry-standard service work and intellectual properties.

These programs have not only trained and enhanced the skills of several South African creatives but also facilitated exchanges between different programs and provided a genuine support pathway for these emerging professionals. The first Mollo Academy trainers were trained at GOBELINS Paris as part of the Master's program, and some Mollo Academy students were admitted to the GOBELINS Master's program for the 2023-2025 period.

To nurture this ecosystem of creatives keen to share their expertise, GOBELINS and Tshimologong launched a short-term training program for two Mollo Academy trainers in 2022. In 2024, GOBELINS and Tshimologong aim to continue this path by implementing a "Train the Trainers" program targeting beneficiaries from South Africa and other African countries to enhance the skills of future trainers and educational engineers in the field of animation.

With the support of the French Embassy in South Africa, NFVF and Wits School of Arts.
