In 2016, the annual fundraising walkathon for the University of Johannesburg (UJ) was postponed due to the #FeesMustFall nation-wide protest action that affected most universities’ operations. UJ is continuing its' efforts in raising funds to help pay tuition fees for underprivileged students who perform well academically. In its inaugural event in October 2015, the UJ Future Walk, supported by the Gauteng Education Department generated just over R1M for student funding.
 
Proceeds from the UJ Future Walk will go towards the “UJ Missing Middle Fund” which raised a total of R101 million in 2016 and paid the fees for 3 878 UJ students. UJ has once again assisted 4 463 students register for studies in 2017. The fund aims to raise a minimum of R120 million in 2017 to support these students.
 
Following the postponement of the UJ Future Walk late last year, the fundraising walkathon will take place on Saturday, 20 May 2017.
