ABOUT

Simfonia Juventi Concert with Fine Soups of the World and a selection of South African Sherries and Dessert Wine
Simfonia Juventi Heidelberg is a celebration of classical music in the historical setting of Heidelberg Gauteng, on the grounds of the century old Volkskool. This event is very special as it is the second of only 3 concerts performed by this orchestra annually.  We believe that Heidelberg was selected as venue for its rich cultural heritage, its excellent location and the conviviality of its people.

The Orchestra
The orchestra, established in 1981, consists this year of 104 talented young musicians, selected from across South Africa. Members reflect musical knowledge, technical excellence and an abundance of talent. The  orchestra is constituted yearly and after intensive preparation, performs only three concerts in 2018.

This year, for the first time, the Orchestra is led by the well-known and celebrated conductor and arranger, Eddie Clayton.

The repertoire includes renowned classical composers such as Beethoven, Tschaikovski, Fauré and Dvorák etc.
Highligts of the evening promise to be the violinist  CATHERINE STIFF's performance of Mendelsohn's violin concerto in E minor first movement and cellist CHRISTOF JOUBERT performing Popper's Elfentanz Op 39.
Contemporary pieces include themes from "Superman" and "How to train your dragon" (Not to be confused with a marriage counselling intervention :) ).

The Conductor - Eddie Clayton
Born in Johannesburg in 1974, Eddie is the great-grandson of British composer Horace Barton and comes from a long line of musicians. He joined the South African Defence Force as a national serviceman in 1993. He was the Principal Trumpet Player and was later appointed as the Principal French Horn Player. In this time, Eddie moved through the ranks and was ultimately appointed as the youngest Military Director of Music in the organisation’s history.
In his career as a full-time freelance musician, Eddie has performed with most of the major orchestras throughout South Africa, including the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, to mention but a few. He is the regular Co-principal Horn Player for the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and was selected to perform with Josh Groban on the final leg of his world tour, performing in Sun City, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. He also performed in the supporting orchestra for the Il Divo world tour.
Eddie has conducted many of the country’s opera companies and well-known orchestras, including Pro Musica, the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Black Tie Ensemble, as well as guest conductor of the Bloemfontein Symphony Orchestra, the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra and the University of Pretoria’s Symphony Orchestra.  He has also been appointed the resident Principal Conductor of the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company (JYOC) and  conductor of the University of Pretoria’s Symphonic Wind Band.
Eddie is the resident Musical Director, Arranger and Composer of the SA Tattoo at Montecasino.  He is also the co-founding member of Spit ’n Polish Brass Quintet, and he is the Principal Horn Player as well as Principal Arranger of the group.
Large-scale musical productions that Eddie has conducted and musically directed, include: The Sound of Music – 2005, My Fair Lady – 2006, The King and I – 2008, Fiddler on the Roof – 2009, Shaka Zulu – 2010, Jock of the Bushveld – 2010, Tree Aan – 2011 (a show for which he won a Naledi Award for Best Musical Director) and Lied van my Hart – 2012 (starring Steve Hofmeyr and Nadine) at the Pretoria State Theatre. Eddie was also approached to conduct the supporting orchestra for the St Petersburg Ballet Company from Russia due to tour South Africa (2012) in the renowned work, Swan Lake. As an active musical educator Eddie taught brass, percussion, improvisation, arranging and conducting. He is also a part-time lecturer in French horn at the University of Pretoria.

We look forward to welcoming you here.
