Join us for an evening with Khaya Mthembu Salter, an exceptional guitarist and composer from Cape Town. Khaya is joined on stage by Guiliette Price on vocals, Joshua Namaire on bass, and Matthew Keswell on drums.
Growing up in a musically rich environment, Khaya was encouraged to explore his musical talents from a young age. His journey began with guitar lessons from the renowned Derek Gripper and was further nurtured by the musical influences of his older brothers. Khaya's diverse exposure to global music genres has shaped his unique style, blending jazz with traditional guitar sounds from West Africa and South Africa. His musical evolution continued under the mentorship of internationally acclaimed jazz double bassist Hein van de Geyn. Now in his second year studying Jazz at UCT, Khaya is a vibrant force in the Cape Town jazz scene, performing regularly with local talents across various genres.
Khaya leads several of his own projects, including the Mthembu Salter-Powell project and the Dylan and Khaya quartet. His impressive resume includes collaborations with international musicians such as Martin Zenker and Kesivan Naidoo. Notably, Khaya was selected for the 2023 and 2024 National Youth Jazz Bands, highlighting his exceptional talent and dedication.
