The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) was established in 1931 as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) to assist South African communities regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or gender.

The Johannesburg Branch provides bags for newborn babies and their mothers in government hospitals and clinics; operates a feeding scheme in Alexandra and a soup kitchen for patients at the Hillbrow Community Health Centre; responds to crisis situations; provides Sewing skills training for the unemployed; arranges aftercare in Alexandra for the children of working parents; hosts weekly Brain Boost stimulation classes for people with dementia; Friendship Club lunches for elderly Jewish people and embarks on many more ad hoc projects.
