ABOUT
Qondiswa James | The People should GovernThe work explores the powerlessness of the vote, and representative democracy in general. It experiments with the idea of participatory democracy, and finding ways to interact with people in public space. The suggestion is that we don’t need permission from the government or political parties to find new methods of participating. The work is a provocation, a question to people: what are we doing with this impoverished freedom? If we continue to fail to hold power to account, is there a way we can exercise power ourselves as citizens?
Qondiswa James is a cultural worker in Johannesburg whose work engages the socio-political imagination towards mobilising transgression.
