ABOUT

Race for Water 2017 Edition - NEW VENUE!

This year we are proud to be supported by the Department of Agriculture at Elsenburg who have graciously offered the use of their facilities to host our event this year, for which we are most grateful!  A huge shout out to Meurant Botha at Dirtopia Trail Centre for extending the use of his awesome trails to make the 14km a neat challenge to the racing snakes!

We offer a 6km race which follows farm tracks on the slopes of Klapmutskop, and a tougher 14km which adds a network of flowing singletracks and vineyard trails on Klapmutskop. The routes are circular, starting and finishing at Elsenburg, and both courses offer stunning views from the Simonsberg to Cape Town.

Why the Race for Water?
One of the main objectives of Volunteer Wildfire Services is the protection and preservation of the Western Cape’s fresh water supply.  The backbone of this system is the remote mountain water catchment areas, and the diverse Fynbos ecosystem that is critical in managing the run-off for a sustainable, year-round water supply.  The future of this life-giving resource is under serious threat each summer, as unnatural wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity, destroying the natural ecosystem before it has time to recover.

Our volunteer firefighting crews are dispatched throughout the fire season to form part of the human barrier that stands between the devastating fires and our incredible natural resources.  Each fire season we are in a Race for Water as we make our way into the remote mountain areas to assist CapeNature in bringing runaway fires under control.  Our men and women are dedicated and driven, spending countless hours in extreme heat and difficult terrain to achieve our goals, and we NEED your support!

Our challenge to you – put on your trail shoes and join our men and women in their Race for Water! 100% of all proceeds go directly to VWS Firefighting Operations, which provides firefighting resources to CapeNature on a voluntary, unpaid, basis.  VWS relies entirely on sponsorship and fund-raising initiatives to be able to operate.

Bring your family!
Race for Water is part of our Fire & Fynbos Awareness Day, an exciting day out for the whole family…from toddlers to grandparents! There are non-stop fun activities for the children as they learn about wildfire and it’s impact on the water crisis, meet the volunteers and other emergency agencies involved when there are fires on the urban fringe. Fire Truck rides, a Climbing Wall, Pumps and Hoses, Snake Shows, as interesting exhibitions are all part of Fire & Fynbos Awareness Day Our volunteers and Friends of VWS Jonkershoek will provide a bustling food court and a tea garden which will satisfy your hunger or sweet tooth.
