THE EVENT
This year's in-person conference event explores the connection between Power and Hunger, specifically the weaponising of hunger.
Part One. Hunger as a Weapon
The morning session is dedicated to laying out the context, connecting with voices from a diversity of locations on the planet where hunger is being weaponised for political gain. From Gaza and Sudan to Ukraine to South Africa we explore the various manifestations and nuances of hunger being deployed as a weapon of warfare, from active warzones to apparently peaceful democracies. This part of the day is led by the Centre of Excellence in Food Security, which holds the Unesco Chair in African Food Systems. Stephen Devereux will present.
Part Two. Design Thinking for Food Systems
The Hasso Plattner d-School Afrika at UCT then presents a workshop on design thinking for food systems. Their Design Dash is a collaborative workshop experience that provides participants with design thinking tools that can be applied to food system challenges. The design leaders behind the d-Skool have contributed to numerous design led initiatives assisting stakeholders to approach problem-solving differently in their sectors, including local governance and NGO structures.
Part Three. Lunch
Chef Ciki Galela of Graceland Café will serve an isiXhosa lunch spread with drinks.
Part Four. Modern LawFare
The afternoon features a panel of activists and journalists, locating the insights of the day within the field of activism, and exploring ways in which to use the law against the law. How knowing the way the system works, creates opportunities to use the system against itself in pursuit of justice.
Carla Joy Bernardo of the Centre of Excellence in Food Security will provide the closing synthesis.
