ABOUT

A poignant exploration of identity, heritage, and sexuality through Aldo Brincat's perspective as a first-generation South African. The Moon Looks Delicious From Here is an award-winning semi-autobiographical solo performance by Brincat that delves into familial and national complexities against the backdrop of South Africa's tumultuous present-day political landscape. Exploring themes of migrancy (Brincat is a first-generation South African citizen), sexuality, language, and political persuasions, Brincat plays a host of characters surrounding a nuclear family with a tense father-son relationship, each character hoping to find themselves as the father and some attempt to ward off the 'otherness' these characters bring. The Moon Looks Delicious From Here is the winner of the 2023 Bitesize Theatre Festival in London.

“…an important play [which] contributes to the tapestry of our shared lives and trauma.” – The Critter.

“Pure magic!” - Artsmart

Brincat’s two great theatrical influences were as a junior actor under the visionary Nicholas Ellgenbogen, in the newly formed and highly controversial Loft Theatre Co. at the Natal Playhouse in Durban; and at the feet of the legendary Jacques Le Coq in Paris in the late 80’s. Upon his return to South Africa, Brincat established Brincat Productions, an ad-hoc theatre company which focused on original, socio-political work, community theatre initiatives, and site-specific activations.  During this time, Brincat received an invitation to perform for His Excellency, Nelson Mandela, on his birthday in 1997; and an invitation to showcase his environmental theatre work, Woza Waste Water, at the World Bank in Washington D.C., in 2000. In 2018, Brincat was commissioned to write a theatrical experience, Light, for Ian Khama to celebrate his election to the Presidency of Botswana. Brincat has been nominated for, and won, several theatre and community initiative awards, and was voted by Brent Meersman of the Mail & Guardian (SA), as among The Top Five Stage Performers of the Decade, 1999 – 2010.  Brincat’s theatre career served as the foundation for his recent  expansion and immersion into the visual arts. In 2018, his epic photography work, Foreign Nationals, was invited to the Brunei Gallery at SOAS, at the University of London for a solo exhibition. Brincat has since completed his postgraduate degree in Fine Art at UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art (Distinction, 2020), and a Master’s in Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University (Cum Laude, 2023).  To date, he has had multiple solo visual art exhibitions in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, England, India, and recently, Sweden. His 21st solo exhibition, At The Edge Of The Vanishing, is currently on at The Gallery at Glen Carlou, in Klapmuts, Cape Town.
