ABOUT

This is going to be a special run, as we are partnering with the Unogwaja Challenge for this one. A long time fan and regular at #Urbantrailsundays, Kirsten Wilkins, is doing this incredible challenge! Here is a little something about it from her:

"The Unogwaja Challenge is an 11 day journey across South Africa following in the footsteps of Phil Masterton Smith, who in 1933 could not afford the train fare to compete in the Comrades Marathon. Not giving up, and despite enormous challenges, he found a bicycle and cycled his way up to compete in and later become the youngest ever winner of the ultimate human race.
Since 2011, the Unogwaja Challenge has mirrored that epic journey of resiliance and determination. The 1780km 10 day bicycle ride followed by the 89km Comrades marathon on day 11 asks each Unogwaja team member to not only extend themselves beyond the physical, but to fundraise for the Unogwaja Light Fund. The reality is that in schools across South Africa, educators, parents and children are working in equally challenging environments attempting to be a success, despite the odds being stacked against them. The Unogwaja Light Fund connects, physical challenge, caring and fundraising action to support primary schools in impoverished areas and support the communities who are holding these schools up.

In May this year, the Unogwaja 2017 team will again set off across South Africa. On this journey we will meet with and stay with many of the individuals, schools and organisations benefiting from our fundraising efforts. It will be a privilege to meet with and encourage people who display far more resilience in everyday life than this athletic challenge demands. Follow us @theUnogwaja to follow us along the way and meet more of these crazy participants and outstanding organisations.

Join us at Get Outside's #UrbanTrailSundays to support The 2017 Unogwaja Challenge by wearing red. Donate on Quicket when you get your free ticket, grab a pair of our famous red SchOops socks on sale on the morning for R100 (snapscan/cash), wear red outfits and all dress up in a manner of silliness. We will also be accepting donations on the morning of the run.
The Get Outside #Urbantrailsundays was the first time I put on running shoes and thought getting outside might lead to something positive. Now its time for Comrades!"
