THE BANDS

Mind Assault is a legend in the South African national scene, having begun working the live circuit 20 years ago in 2004. Whilst early days Mind Assault had a rather stripped-down thrashy style, the band's sound evolved continuously to include melodic death metal influence, laced with epic orchestration and cinematic charisma.

Orphean Passage offers up a sorely scarce style for local metal with it's brand of tragic doom. Moody, heavy and emotive, the band weaves in crushing death-doom influences from the UK 90s era along with dark, dreamy passages and introspective lyrics. Definitely a rising force on the local live scene, and capturing the imagination of listeners world-wide.

Dead Man Risen hails from the Eastern Cape port city of Gqeberha. Whilst many bands seek to grow heavier, or faster, or more complex, DMR brings a contagious simplicity to the moshpit. One can describe it as death metal, but with some electronic/gothic overtones. Having functioned as a one-man project since 2017 with several full length albums under the belt, DMR emerged as a band with a roaring live debut at METAL4AFRICA'23.

Metal Karoo III may yet have another trick up its sleeve. Follow the facebook event page closely for updates. Pricing will not be influenced.

THE CAMPING

Karoo Saloon has some areas of soft, luscious lawn perfect for pitching tents. If your timing is good, there are also quite a few good spots for morning shade up for grabs. On site is the concert venue with an outdoor stage, a 24-hour ablution block, and the Rock Roadhouse which is a pub, resturaunt and live music venue. Plan your meals though, since the kitchen does close eventually and people tend to lose track of time under the Karoo night sky. For the daylight hours, there is a nicely sized dipping pool with freshly pumped ground water to cool off.

OTHER ACCOMMODATION

There are many off-site accommodation options for non-campers in Barrydale (10km) and/or the immediate surrounding areas filled with rural charm.

THE ROAD TRIP

To get the best out of this experience, consider it as more than just a gig in a far-off place. It's an exquisite opportunity to explore and enjoy our beautiful countryside. There are months to plan for a little holiday, so save some money, book some leave, and plan your travel route to get the most out of it.

FROM CAPE TOWN, consider going over Du Toitskloof Pass rather than through the tunnel. Although you might take the N1 out of the city, maybe do the round trip coming back via the N2 or vice-versa? It'll be well worth it. Plan so that you can spend some time in the gorgeous Cogmanskloof Pass near Montagu. Just 15km beyond the venue is the breathtaking Tradouw Pass, and lots of cool stops to consider in and between the towns along the way.

FROM GEORGE / GQEBERHA, the same applies. Did you know that the R62 was the original land route connecting Cape Town to Port Elizabeth? To this day, much has been preserved in the towns and villages along this way since they were graced by an earlier age of prestige and prosperity. And then another round-trip opportunity exists with the luscious Garden Route / Overberg region.
