Have you ever struggled to write an article? Had a fear of a clear page? Procrastinated over your thesis?.. You don't need to share your desk with the writing block any longer.
Academic Article Writing Workshop presented by Elizaveta Kovaleva is intended for scientists who wish to excel as successful academic writers. If you are a postgraduate student or a faculty staff member, and you are willing to become an author or strengthen your writing skills, we can't wait to see you at this online workshop!
Academic articles range from dissertations, research proposals, and extended abstracts to book chapters, research letters, and full research papers. All of them have a very defined structure, with a clear purpose for every section or part. At the Academic Article Writing Workshop, you will master a writing recipe that will help you climb the academic ladder.
The workshop will train you to design and plan your academic article, overcome the writing block, and defeat the common writing myths. It will guide you through the writing process, clarify how to structure, format, and edit your article, and will prepare you for what to expect from the peer-review process and the communication with journal editors. You will ask questions, participate in discussions, share your experience, and receive some practical exercises!
The workshop is composed of three sessions (ca. 3 hours each), which will cover these topics:
- Why do we publish papers?
- What is the difference between a research paper and any other written document?
- What is the structure of a paper?
- What are the main elements of a paper and what is their purpose?
- How to select the material for an article and combine it into a coherent story?
- How to organize your writing process?
- How to come up with an informative title?
- How to create an effective outline of the article?
- How to write up a scientific background?
- How to describe Materials and Samples?
- How to prepare neat Figures and Tables?
- What goes into the Results? And into the Discussion?
- What should be covered in the Conclusions?
- What is the difference between the Abstract and the Conclusions?
- How to select appropriate Keywords?
- How to format your Reference list?
- What happens at the draft editing stage?
- What to include in an article vs. a research proposal vs. a dissertation?
We will also go through such nuances as:
- Journal selection and submission process
- Writing a strong Cover letter
- Peer-review process: what to expect?
- How to deal with the editing process and the re-submission?
- Proof-reading stage
- Publication process
