ABOUT
Joshua Nemaire is a young, up-and-coming musician from Zimbabwe, aged 23. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies at the South African College of Music. His main instruments are the Double Bass and the Electric Bass.
Joshua started his musical journey when he was just 10 years old, learning how to play the drums in church. At age 15, he picked up the electric bass and electric keyboard in church, through guidance from his good friend, Tinaye Chirema.
In 2019 Josh took up the role of junior master as music department assistant to Mr Owen Chimuka at Ruzawi School in Marondera, Zimbabwe. This is where Joshua was introduced to Jazz and the Upright bass by Mr Chimuka, who is a brilliant piano player. At this time Joshua took up the Double Bass and got accepted to study Jazz at the South African College of Music in 2020. He is currently in his 4th year at the University and is a part of the UCT big band and UCT symphony orchestra.
Joshua has performed with many different artists from South Africa including, Afrika Mkhize, Andrew Lilley, Mandla Mlangeni, Mark Fransman, Buddy Wells, Reza Khota, Blake Hellaby and many others. He has participated in a couple of festivals in Cape Town and beyond in the past few years that Josh has been studying, including The Youth in Music Excellence festival, The Artscape Youth Jazz Festival, The National Youth Jazz Festival - Makhanda, The Journey to Jazz festival - Prince Albert and The Cape Town Big band Festival.
Joshua is influenced by a wide variety of styles and artists from Jazz, Hiphop, Neo Soul and African contemporary music. Some of his most inspiring artists include Jacob Collier, Richard Bona, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Robert Glasper and Christian McBride, just to mention a few.
