with Carin van Heerden and Element of Prime
The 18th annual Recorder Symposium is proudly presented in collaboration with the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra (Artistic Director – Erik Dippenaar), the Department of Music, Stellenbosch University (Karin Maritz - Recorder Lecturer), Westerford High School Music Department (Birgit Penny - Head of Music) and the Cape Town Recorder Symposium administrators – Karin Maritz, Birgit Penny, Elizabeth Sole & Barbara Warner-Smith.
The focus will be on ensemble playing, presented by Carin van Heerden and her 5-part recorder ensemble, Element of Prime from Austria. Cape Town-born, Carin van Heerden has been living and working as a recorder and baroque oboe specialist in Austria for the past 40 years. She is co-founder of the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, directs the L’Orfeo Wind Ensemble and is a member of the recorder consort, Element of Prime. She is currently teaching baroque oboe at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität in Linz. Element of Prime consists of the following members: Carin van Heerden, Domenika Thanner, Magdalena Rath, Veronika Traxler and Michaela Vaught.
Masterclasses will include the Stellenbosch University and Settlers’ High School Recorder Ensembles, a Recorder Quartet and a Trio Sonata, and will conclude with a combined Ensemble comprising all participants at the Symposium.
