ABOUT

CHARLES OBINA Charles Obina (@obina.charles) •

Charles Obina is Uganda’s contemporary jazz and folk musician, seamlessly blending a wide range of traditional instruments with a modern sound. With over a decade of experience in traditional troupes in Kampala, Charles has developed a unique style, particularly in playing the Adungu, an instrument he upgraded from one to three octaves. This multiple-string Adungu produces a rich, modern acoustic guitar-like sound that complements Western instruments. Charles, a graduate of the Africa Institute of Music in Kampala, specializes in contemporary guitar.

Inspired by great world musicians like the late Geoffrey Oryema, Charles's music resonates with audiences, offering melodies and lyrics that motivate, uplift, and inspire. He has represented Uganda at various local and international events, including the Uganda Tourism Expo in Russia 2023, Uganda's independence celebration in Kenya, and opening for the Tunisian Smadj concert in Kampala.

Charles's music has been featured in documentaries, and he has collaborated with students from the Swedish Red Cross University in creating suitable backing tracks for films. Currently, he is recording his debut album, "Gen Gire," an Acholi phrase translating to "Rely on what belongs to you," set to release by the end of 2023. Collaborations like "Adungu Blues" with Alif Chieff from Brunei and "Nyesiga" with Haka Mukiga showcase his diverse musical prowess.

As Charles focuses on creating more music and collaborating with different artists, he is equally dedicated to sharing his rich cultural heritage through
