ABOUT

Omens of Gratitude/Imikhokha Yokubonga showcases Nduduzo Makhatini and Greatjoy Ndlovu’s interplay with their respective art forms to influence and inspire one another. The artists will collaboratively interpret each other to project this fusion of music and painting. Omens of Gratitude is an artistic collaboration between the renowned afro-jazz icon, and top contemporary expressionist. A truly immersive and unforgettable experience for the audience, sparking new conversations on the relationship between music and visual arts. An innovative and captivating live multimedia performance that combines the art of music with the art of painting, to delight the eyes and ears, engaging the audience on a deep level.


Art exhibition


An exclusive exhibition from contemporary visual Artist Olwethu De Vos will be presented to the audience as part of the opening of the event. Olwethu De Vos is a contemporary multidisciplinary visual artist and curator currently based in Johannesburg. Exploring both two- and three-dimensional artistic approaches and techniques, De Vos’s body of work centres around the emotional, psychological and social wellbeing of individuals advocating for new positive ways of relating to one another.


Music


The interplay  probes the mystery of the doors a grateful spirit opens to create powerful avenues for liberation. The fusion of music mastery and cadence of  artworks convey the spirit of gratitude with palpable newness and intrigue. In these works, gratitude supersedes and overshadows notions of lack, revelling in every small triumph while propelling the striving one with optimistic projections of a bright future. The mind's attention is directed to the present and reconciled with past and present circumstances, and the soul savours the contentment of enjoying what has already been obtained. By paying attention to the present, the mind rallies itself to notice the fortunes presented by each passing moment, thereby carving multiple doors to exploit.


Lecture


In addition to the captivating collaboration between Ndududuzo and Greatjoy’s ‘interplay of music and art, Makhatini will deliver an academic paper that will delve into the rich history, theories and influences that shapes the interplay between these two forms of art. The reading aims to deepen the audience’s engagement and enrich their experience during the subsequent performances.
