Fabrication - a themed art crawl

ABOUT

In her next series of #artcrawls art critic, commentator and curator, Mary Corrigall will investigate how textile design and production have influenced a generation of artists. Artists are now self-consciously immersing themselves in labour intensive craft practices, challenging the widely held (though often incorrect) notion that contemporary art is easy to produce and is distinct from the design world.

This exclusive, intimate, curated ‘art-crawl’ is inspired by the Women’s Work exhibition currently on at the South African National Gallery (Sang), however, it offers a wider historical context and extends the craft/art debate beyond gender lines. It is delivered in an easy and accessible manner.

Starting out at Clarke’s Bookshop Corrigall will outline the historic influences on this textile driven turn in contemporary art, such as the feminist craft/art movement of the sixties in the US and traditional African craft practices.

Every artist applies textiles differently and has their own story to tell. During the crawl you will discover some of these idiosyncratic takes by visiting galleries in the city, where Corrigall will tease out the threads of this theme and meet artists embracing textiles in their practice.

A short guided tour of the Women’s Work exhibition at the National Gallery will conclude with a conversation with a featured artist. Depending on which #artcrawl you book for you will meet Ilene Bothma at 99Loop, Maurice Mbikayi at Gallery Momo, Siwa Mgoboza or Tamlin Blake at SANG. The highlight will be a studio visit with Pierre Fouché, who has absorbed lace-making techniques into his intricate but subversive art practice.

The crawl ends with a lunch (optional) in a quirky city destination.

Aspiring art collectors, art lovers, or new visitors to the city are all encouraged to join.

To keep the crawl intimate no more than 15 people will be accommodated, so book promptly in advance.
