ABOUT
Join us for a special evening with Kujenga.
Kujenga is a seven-piece Black improvised music outfit based in Cape Town. The band’s
name comes from the Swahili language, with the word meaning “to build”. This title
symbolises what the group believes to be their calling as creators: to build meaningful
works, experiences and connections with each and every listener. Kujenga follows on
from the rich legacy of Black band music in South Africa - including Sakhile, Batsumi,
The Muffinz and countless others - with the ensemble aspiring to represent the present
and future of this historic sound.
The band consists of Zwide Ndwandwe on bass, his twin brother Owethu Ndwandwe on
piano, Thane Smith on electric guitar, Skhumbuzo Qamata on drums, Bonga Mosola on
trumpet, Matthew Rightford on tenor sax and Tamzyn Freeks on trombone. Kujenga
have shared the stage with acts such as Mandisi Dyantis and The Brother Moves On,
having played across South Africa at events such as uManyano Lwe Jazz festival in
Joburg, Cape Town Jazzathon and more. Kujenga released their debut album
Nationality in 2019, and are set to release their second offering, ‘In The Wake’.
