Braamfontein Cemetery - Symbols in Stone

Sat Nov 18, 14:00 - Sat Nov 18, 16:30

Braamfontein Cemetery

ABOUT

What other cemetery in the world links together the Titanic, the Cullinan Diamonds, the Rand Revolt, the Foster Gang, Enoch Sontonga, pasta and a tyre? Only Braamfontein cemetery, the first official graveyard in Johannesburg.

Since welcoming its first occupant, a baby boy, in 1888, Braamfontein has become the final resting place of the rich and poor, famous and infamous; a broad collection of early Joburgers, many of whom helped shape the city and South Africa’s history.

Led by expert guides, Sarah, Nicola and Antoinette, this walking tour will explore the ‘cemeteries within the cemetery’ - special sections set aside for various denominations or tributary memorials.

As we walk, we’ll examine the beautifully designed gravestones, each a miniature piece of architecture. From scrolls to urns to cherubs, discover the meaning behind the various symbols used on the headstones and graves.

This is sure to be a fascinating afternoon. Book now!

Please wear good walking shoes, bring a hat and plenty of drinking water.
