Toy maker Dr Coppélius has an introverted beautiful young lady in his house whose only pleasure seems to be reading books on the balcony. Franz and his fellow young village men are intrigued by her, but she is aloof ignoring their advances, no matter how hard they try. Franz's fiancée, Swanhilda is not at all pleased by Franz's interest in another woman, but she and her friends are equally curious about this reclusive girl who keeps to herself.
