Robin Auld is a well-known South African musician, writer and producer. He was born in Lusaka, Zambia in 1959, to Scottish parents who worked as a magistrate and a nurse. He moved to Cape Town, South Africa when he was three years old. He learned to play the guitar by listening to various artists, such as Jimi Hendrix, Ry Cooder and Neil Young. He also developed an interest in African guitar styles, such as mbaqanga and maskandi

He started his career as a session musician in the late 1970s, playing with several bands, such as the Lancaster Band and the Steve Walsh Roots Rhythm Band. He released his first solo album, At the Corner, in 1982, which was produced by Kevin Shirley. He had several radio hits in South Africa, including Baby You’ve Been Good to Me and All of Woman. He moved to the UK in 1986, where he continued to record and perform. He returned to South Africa in 1992, and won a South African Music Award (SAMA) for his album Love Kills. He has collaborated with many other South African artists, such as Johnny Clegg, Vusi Mahlasela and Sipho Mabuse. He has also produced albums for other artists, such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2012

He has released a total of 20 albums to date, along with a novel and a poetry collection. His music combines influences from Western and African genres, creating a unique and authentic sound. His novel, Tight Lines, was published in 2000, and tells the story of a fishing trip through the eyes of a teenager. His poetry collection, Kelp, was published in 2006, and contains themes about the sea, South African culture and nature

Slide guitar, harmonica, African blues guitar stylings and soul vocals all feature in the fresh sound of Robin Auld. Familiar to South Africans from his hits All of Woman, Baby you been good, Perfect Day and many others, Robin Auld’s music has evolved from the poprock sound of his early hits into a contemporary mix of roots and blues.

He learned to play the guitar by listening to Hendrix, Ry Cooder and Neil Young, also absorbing influences from the various guitarists of Southern Africa.

He plays lively solo shows with a stompboard and loop pedal, and as an electric band with some of SA’s top musicians. Based in Cape Town, he has performed and recorded in New York, London, Glasgow and Nashville, performing at festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, Tartan Hearts, Gold Coast Ocean Fest, and Womad.
