"Friends and Family" Art Exhibition Unveils a Kaleidoscope of Artistic Connections in Cape Town
Brace yourselves, art enthusiasts, for a groundbreaking exhibition that transcends the boundaries of time, craft, and medium. Curated by the multidisciplinary contemporary artist, Jared Aufrichting, the "Friends and Family" exhibition is set to take Cape Town by storm at a local hidden gem of the art world, Brutal: Gallery and Project Space. This artistic showcase is captivating audiences throughout the entire month of September, including an impressive and diverse array of artists spanning generations and disciplines.
Prepare to be enchanted by a unique blend of artistic brilliance as "Friends and Family" features artworks and anecdotes of renowned talents like Walter Battiss, Roger Ballen, MF DOOM, RETNA, RISK, Zanele Muholi, Angelika Sauer, Shepard Fairey, KRONK, Tyler B Murphy, DALEAST, Stefan Smit, Ryan Shava, MOTELSEVEN, Fhatuwani Mukheli, Samurai Farai, Alice Goldin, James Thomas, Gaia, Max Wolpe, Paul Senyol, Ray Barbee, FAITH 47, and Sam Nhlengethwa.
What sets "Friends and Family" apart from other exhibitions is the personal connection between curator Jared Aufrichting and the artists featured in the show. Born in Los Angeles and based in South Africa for half of each year over the past decade, Jared Aufrichting's connections run deep. "Walter Battiss was my grandmother's close friend," Jared reveals, "one of the pieces in the show is inscribed 'to Edith, thank you for my first exhibition.'"
Jared continues to weave this intimate tapestry of relationships, explaining how Max Wolpe attended Ruth Prowse art school with his mother and how his grandmother Edith was friends with Max's father, who owned a gallery. He also notes that Alice Goldin is a relative through marriage, and it was her grandson Blaise Janichon who played a pivotal role in nurturing Jared's relationships with other artists in the show through his gallery, "The Bin."
The core narrative of "Friends and Family" revolves around community and mentorship, two essential elements in the world of art. The exhibition seeks to highlight these connections and emphasize their pivotal role in the creative process.
Among the exhibition's gems are four personal Polaroid photographs, all captured by Jared Aufrichting. These include a collaboration with Roger Ballen, as well as portraits of iconic figures such as Tyler the Creator, DALEAST pictured in his Cape Town studio, and the celebrated Zanele Muholi.
Elad Kirshenbaum, of Brutal. Gallery and a prominent Cape Town entrepreneur, believes that art collections should evolve over a lifetime, each piece representing a unique moment in time. He asserts, "Jared is a very talented curator and a very good networker. He always brings some interesting angles to the mix."
"Friends and Family" is a testament to the power of artistic connections and the enduring impact of mentorship. It invites visitors to embark on a journey through time and craft, celebrating the diverse talents that enrich Cape Town's vibrant art scene.
One of the exhibition's highlights is a ticketed Art Dinner Experience on Thursday, September 28th, offering an exclusive opportunity to engage with various artists and their works, as well as the curator himself. Details for this unique event can be found at https://fb.me/e/1dpqbSJHj. Additionally, the exhibition will culminate in a grand closing event on Saturday, September 30th, featuring DJs and refreshments, open to the public.
Don't miss the opportunity to witness this extraordinary exhibition, which promises to be a landmark event in Cape Town's cultural calendar. Join us at Brutal: Gallery and Project Space throughout September, and be part of the "Friends and Family" experience.
