ABOUT
A generous sideman, band leader, multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Jiyane stands at the vanguard of his prodigious generation of jazz musicians. Operating from the centre and the fringes of the South African jazz scene, the trombonist (and pianist) is an enigmatic yet charismatic galvaniser of his contemporaries, able to put them through their paces in his own compositions, while giving them enough room for interpretation by the new band.
Born in Daveyton, Benoni, in the East Rand, I embarked on my musical journey at the age of 16 when I enrolled at the Music Academy of Gauteng. There, I had the privilege of being mentored by the late, great South African trumpet player, educator, and philanthropist, Dr. Johnny Mekoa.
Throughout my career, I've had the honor of performing alongside esteemed artists such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Feya Fakude, Louis Moholo, Andile Yenana, Nduduzo Makhathi, Zim Nqawane, Lindiwe Maxolo, Unathi, Pro Kid, Yuseff Latiff, Adris Alba, Themba Mkhize, and many others.
My recording credits include collaborations with Herbie Tsoaeli on "African Time," Tumi Mogorosi's "Project Elo," Judith Semenya's "Live DVD," Mvuzo Dimba's "Pre-Sent," Feya Fakude's "Big Band," Lindiwe Maxolo's "Time," and more.
In 2022, I released my debut album, titled "UMDALI," which quickly gained international acclaim, earning me an invitation to perform at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in 2022 and embark on European tours.
I am proud to have been recognised with the Best Male and Best South African Jazz Awards in 2022.
