The Herald Christmas Cheer Fund

ABOUT

Notably, one of the busiest times of year, Christmas pops up sooner than expected. While we get ramped up for the festive season, preparing for the big day and all it has to offer we often forget about the simplest act and basic purpose of Christmas, the gift of giving.

The Herald Christmas Cheer Fund, one of the oldest charities born in December 1902 and known as the Shilling Fund, was first established as a means of supporting the staff of the newspaper. Only after was it realised that there were so many more charities needing assistance during the Christmas holidays.

The fund refocused its efforts in order to collect contributions which are now distributed to children in institutions or places of safety and care, the aged, the poor, sick and the disabled who often don’t experience the Cheer during the Christmas season due to lack of funds.

Although many private individuals make donations and bequests to the Fund, it is most important for our businesses, schools and other institutions to follow suit in supporting this worthy cause. All proceeds which the fund receives are allocated to the selected organisations and charities upon formal application by these bodies and all administration costs incurred by the Fund are borne by The Herald.

The selected organisations are published in The Herald in time for the organisations to arrange their Christmas functions, which some might not think so important as these organisations have many basic needs but Christmas Cheer does so much more for the human spirit than believed.
