Date: Saturday 3 September 2023

Time: 09:00 - 17:35

You are invited to join us at SAPI Education Day 2023 where we will explore the many ways we listen when holding a psychoanalytic stance. We are delighted to have Barnaby B Barratt join us as our keynote speaker. Barnaby will present a paper focusing on multimodal listening in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Our panel of psychoanalytic practitioners/thinkers including Brian Watermeyer, Coenie Hattingh, Esther Chunga and Shayleen Peeke will then explore listening across a diverse range of clinical settings and contexts. A number of clinical vignettes will be presented and discussed. Our day will conclude with a plenary session facilitated by Maxine Dennis.

SPEAKER PROFILES:

Barnaby B Barratt is a Training and Supervising Analyst with the South African Psychoanalytic Association and a Supervising Analyst with the Indian Psychoanalytic Society. He is currently working on three books: 1. a re-visioning of human sexuality, 2. a collection of essays on psychoanalytic processes, and 3. a long essay on the prospects for psychoanalysis in its encounters with African wisdom traditions.

Brian Watermeyer trained as a clinical psychologist (M.A. Clin. Psych.) at the University of Cape Town, before completing a doctorate in psychology (D. Phil), focusing on disability studies, at Stellenbosch University. He was first editor of South Africa’s first major text in disability studies, entitled Disability and Social Change: A South African Agenda, published in 2006 (HSRC Press). His second book, Towards a Contextual Psychology of Disablism, was published internationally by Routledge in 2013. His most recent book is The Palgrave Handbook of Disability and Citizenship in the Global South (New York: Palgrave), edited by B. Watermeyer, J. McKenzie and L. Swartz (2019). Brian has an extensive list of international journal publications, book chapters, and media appearances as a disability scholar and activist. He has taught on a host of postgraduate programmes at Stellenbosch University, UCT and UWC, in disability studies, clinical psychology, general psychology, medicine and rehabilitation science.

Coenie Hattingh is a neuropsychologist in private practice in the Southern suburbs of Cape Town. His clinical work is organised around the diagnosis of rare and atypical neurodegenerative illness, and working psychotherapeutically with these patients and their families. As of September this year, Coenie is a junior candidate with SAPA.

Esther Chunga is a psychologist, psychoanalytic candidate and is the Executive Director at The Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust. Esther’s deep involvement in the organisation draws from her understanding and keen interest in psychoanalytic thinking and practice, and how this is made use of in developing programmes and interventions which respond to the needs of some of the most dire and deprived contexts in South Africa. Esther feels strongly about advocating for low cost models and making mental health care and support accessible for the broader African population.

Shayleen Peeke joined the first infant observation group in Johannesburg thirty years ago. This beginning was facilitated by Zelma Joffe and Sheila Miller. Her involvement with infant observation has been continuous since then as a facilitator and teacher in community settings and with those interested in developing their work with children. Through the IPCP, infant observation has been offered as a foundation for the Therapeutic Communication course with children. Shayleen trained as a Social Worker and Clinical Psychologist at the University of the Witwatersrand. She works in private practice.
