ABOUT

Isicelo Sendlela

African Music is usually viewed as a kind of music that is of traditional origin and music that takes us back to our roots (embo) because of the originality of many indigenous African instruments that we play as African Musicians and that is not always the case. In this performance I want to show my versatility within African music and how I modernise it to make it sound relatable to the present times. With the African(Xhosa) bows, uHadi and uMrhubhe that I’ll be playing in between my performance, I’ll be trying to show how I use them to make them sound more relatable to me as a youngster with the infusion of some classical instruments such as guitar and piano.

With this performance I aim to change the narrative about how African music is viewed and I hope my audience will be able to see that African Music is not always spiritual and traditional but how the sound is delivered is what matters. I hope to heal their hearts and get through their souls with all the tools that I’ve gathered to make this performance a success.

The Title, “Isicelo Sendlela” basically means the manifestation and the prayer of the journey and in this performance I will be praying and manifesting for success for my music career journey and being able to embrace the beauty of it regardless of it’s ups and downs.

I hope you enjoy the performance your support is highly appreciated.

Bio:

Siya was born and bred in Cape Town and stayed in Joe Slovo Park in Milnerton which is where he spent a lot of time growing up till now.

In his whole journey he was catching the love of Music from his church as he grew up going to church in Twelve Apostles’ Church in Christ. He started taking part in church competitions where he would be the leader of some songs and would conduct the Sunday school choir as he was also a part of it growing up and that was driven by the passion he had in music.

In 2014 when he started High school, he took part in the school Choir and was given the award of recognition for that as he was very active in the choir. He also joined a Drama group as he always had an interest in acting and dancing but was helping mostly with music which is where he was introduced to Djembe the African instrument which was the only instrument that they used during their plays. He then fell in love with the instrument and started searching about it and then the love for it grew until he decided to be an African musician.

He carried the love of African music until he got enrolled at the South African College of Music at university of Cape Town where he majored in performing African Instruments. Early 2023 he graduated and got his Diploma in African Music Performance and is now doing his Postgrad Diploma in African Music Performance at South African College of Music in UCT learning more about the career path he has chosen for himself. He has started participating as a backing vocalist to a few artists around Cape Town and has started his journey as a performer and taking part in theatre productions as well as it is one of the things he like and enjoy doing dearly.
