Short biography of Almie

I was brought up on our family farm where my interest in arts and crafts was nurtured by my mother. I recall how much I enjoyed school holidays, it was time well spent learning craft skills and making things with my mom. I furthered my education and qualified as a lawyer. I met and married my soulmate, had 3 beautiful children and put my professional career on the back burner. Stepping out of the rat race gave me the opportunity to indulge time in my hobby.  Our family business required us to live in England for 15 years. There I went on highly recognised courses and was privileged to broaden my range of craft expertise. My knowledge base broadened to such an extent that I can with confidence mix many mediums, techniques or products. I found my niche, taking items which has no further use, or are damaged, and recycled them. I enjoy creating a grand item and giving it a second chance. I authored a book via Struik called ‘FROM DRAB TO FAB’ in 2014. Since then, I have written many magazine articles, which has been published in the United Kingdom, Australia, France, America and South Africa. The emotional aspects of what motivates people while expressing themselves on a creative level fascinates me. I continue with vast research in this area. To commercialise your craft talent is a big step. Suddenly objects and tasks get bigger but with perseverance and little sleep I have decorated many houses with recycled furniture and objects.
