ABOUT
Die schöne Magelone, consists of 15 poems from Ludwig Tieck’s Liebesgeschichte der schönen Magelone und des Grafen Peter von Provence, or translated as The Love Story of the beautiful Magelone and the knight Peter of Provence. Tieck’s 15 poems were set to music by Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) for baritone and piano and are interwoven with narrated descriptive text between poems.
The story, celebrating love in the most romantic possible way, takes place in medieval France, and is set against unspoilt nature, enchanting forests and rivers, unexplored islands, and mysterious castles. The main character is the young Peter, the noble son of the Count of Provence. Peter meets a visiting minstrel, who tells tales of beautiful distant lands, and Peter decides that he must travel the world. He bids his parents farewell and starts his adventures, meeting the beautiful princess Magelone of Naples, and falls madly in love with her. However, their path to love is not without a few twists and turns.
Join Dolf Mathee (baritone), Jana Mathee (pianist), and Hanna van Schalkwyk (narrator) as they explore Peter and Magelone’s tail of love and tribulations. Ms. Mathee will perform this examination recital for the partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree Doctor in Music – Performance (D.Mus.).
Admission is free of charge, but everyone is encouraged to donate a non-perishable food item to contribute to the NWU School of Music food bank.
