WHAT IS A MANDALA?

'A mandala (Sanskrit: ?????) is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe. In everyday use, "mandala" has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.' Mandalas often exhibit radial balance and have design features of sacred shapes.

In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be used for focusing the attention of its observer, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. Mandalas often can impart a sense of energy through the alignment and repetition of geometric forms.
