ABOUT

Kesivan Naidoo in collaboration with House of Sachane present a rare performance by Kesivan and the Lights featuring South Africa’s preeminent jazz musicians. Kesivan is unarguably the most eminent South African drummer of his generation. Say, what? Well, this is a cat who honed his sure-fire feel for sonic spectacle with a roll call of SA jazz masters, from the iconic Miriam Makeba, pianists Hotep Galeta and Bheki Mseleku to saxophonist Winston Mankunku, drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo and beyond. It is his reverential feel for history, space and place that he channelled in his seminal 2014 album Kesivan and the Lights’ Brotherhood. At a sold-out Carnegie Hall premiere, no less. Dig it? Fast forward to 2024 and the Swiss-based Naidoo is reimagining The Lights as something of a ‘Brotherhood of CapeTown’ experience. Bringing together an all star cast of past and present Standard Bank young artists of the year. The band will include this year's winner trumpeter Darren English, saxophonist Sisonke Xonti, pianist Kyle Shepherd, bassist Benjamin Jephta and young up and coming guitarist Khaya Mthembu-Salter. Join Naidoo to explore modal Afro-Indo modulations, shadowy cinematic improvisations and more. The event will also serve as a follow up to the launch of House of Sachane and include conversations with the band led by celebrated broadcaster Koketso Sachane
