ABOUT
Well-known for the singular depth of his soothing baritone voice, Dumza Maswana fuses traditional, spiritual, soul and jazz to create sonic experiences that uplift, inspire and heal. He writes and sings from a place of knowing, reflecting his experiences and paying homage to his culture and home.
Born in the vibrant small town of Ngqushwa, in the Eastern Cape, Dumza was drawn to music at an early age. His grandmother was his very first teacher, introducing him to the art of singing and storytelling.
Having been influenced by the likes of Victor Ntoni, Jabu Khanyile and Ringo Madlingozi, Dumza’s lyrical prowess, wide vocal range and authenticity earned him a SAMA nomination for his debut album, Molo, which was released in 2016. The album was well-received, together with gems such as Emihle, which was dedicated to his daughter, and Nomthandazo, which listed on 17 different radio stations, including Kaya-FM, Umhlobo Wenene, and SAfm. His song The Letter received the award for Best Jazz Song at the 2017 Mzansi Jazz Awards.
Dumza’s artistry has landed him on global stages, including the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, where he was accompanied by the Mzansi Musical Ensemble, and the Sing! Festival in Toronto, Canada. Locally, he has performed at the Joy Of Jazz, Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Macufe Festival, and the Buyelekhaya Music Festival.
In his live performances, He is known for taking the audience on a journey, inviting them to take part in his enchanting storytelling and His music is intimately attached to the history of African traditional music and its culture.
With his very unique deep voice he brings a rare articulation to Afro-Jazz music. Each song that Dumza writes and performs reflects his strong understanding and appreciation for his roots.
He is bringing his sextet and will perform songs from his 2 studio albums, MOLO & CELEBRATING AFRICAN SONG. His music is a fusion of traditional, spiritual, soul and jazz music. Get ready to be uplifted, inspired, and healed this July.
