Year of Dogs & Gaze live at Gorgeous George

Year of Dogs:

The group captured the attention of critics and casual listeners alike with the release of their debut EP ‘Pavement Special’ in February 2021. The release earned the group features in local and international media alike, with their first single ‘Sweet Red’ going on to reach Number #1 in the South African Alternative Music charts, where it remained in the Top 20 for over 30 weeks.

To date, Year of Dogs have shared the stage with notable acts such as Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, BCUC, Desmond & the Tutus, December Streets, and Shortstraw, with a highlight performance in December 2021 on the 5FM New Year’s Eve live stream. Much of the group’s influence stems from groups like: Tame Impala, Mac De Marco, Parcels, MGMT, and Jungle, as well as French house disco groups: FKJ, L’imperatrice, Polo and Pan, and Paradis. Year of Dogs is comprised of Nic van Graan (vocals), Themba Bosch (guitar), Alex Birns (drums) and Dillon Birns (bass).

Gaze:

Consisting of Lauren Thomas (vocals), Reggie Pienaar (guitar), Desmond Kannemeyer (guitar), Dan Charles (bass) and Keagan Hollywood (drums) - GAZE began as somewhat of a Julia Jacklin/Phoebe Bridgers cover band before gradually evolving into an amalgamation of the guitar-driven intensity of ‘90s alt-rock and the lush, melodic sensibilities of melancholic dream-pop. 

Since the release of their debut single “Last Look” and its accompanying MMVA award-winning music video (directed and produced by Josh Stein and Nicola Harris), GAZE has been gradually winning over crowds within the Cape Town music scene after seeming to have “cracked the code for heart-throb music in all its alt-rock glory.” At least that’s what Texx and The City had to say about them and, really, who are they to disagree with a reputable online music publication like that?
