To coincide with the second album's single releases, Jonny played a sold-out debut show at Cafe Roux in Noordhoek. Raised in the seaside town of Hout Bay on artists such as Nick Drake, Ben Howard, Jose Gonzalez, Civil Twilight and Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Hayes’s debut album 'Daybreak' was released in 2021 when he was the age of 23. He had begun to teach himself music and singing just three years prior. The singles ‘I Won’t Let You Go’ and ‘Bathe’ from his debut album featured on a number of prominent Apple Music and Spotify playlists. The singles 'Movie', 'The Ghost' and 'Keep Me Burning' from the latest project have been featured on New Music Daily, New In Alternative, The Late Night Menu, Beneath the Stars and New In Indie playlists.
Recorded in Oranjezicht and Hout Bay, Hayes’s new material blends those signature hushed vocals with restrained instrumentation and raw textures, his inspirations now stretching from ambient music, to Damien Rice, to early Coldplay demos, as well as Sam Bentley of The Paper Kites. Of ‘Dust On The Ground’, Hayes explains: “It’s a song of letting go. When we are caught up in the burdens of life, we think the best way forward is to rely on our own strength and abilities. The song is about surrendering and asking for help from others. When you’ve been so low for so long, but you’ve appeared so high and so loud, it might be time to speak up about your faults, your shortcomings and your pains. This was one of the last pivotal songs for me since the general sentiment breeds hope and a surrendered way of living.”
Built on the minimalist acoustic folk foundations he explored in his earlier music, Hayes’s sophomore album 'I Remember Where Light Goes' is a more embodied record, fostered around lyrical content. Shedding the acoustics of previous work in favour of minimal delays and electric instrumentation, the 10-song album has a run-time of just over 30 minutes. This was a time of honesty for Jonny as he learned to write himself out of a bit of a hole. “Life is beautiful and I needed to remind myself of that truth. Our hearts are wayward and contradictory, but we need to remember where light goes - how far it can reach. Every shadow suggests the presence of the light.”
