Introduction

Dramabuzz Senior presents its second theatrical production - Pygmalion. After the stunning success of 2021's play, The Importance of Being Earnest, Dramabuzz Senior is back and ready to take you to new heights. Pygmalion is the play, written by George Bernard Shaw, that inspired the much loved musical "My Fair Lady". This delightful script is full of humour, wit, and thought-provoking dialogue. The story follows an experiment conducted by two phoneticians who aim to transform a young girl from a gutter-snipe who sells flowers on the street, to a duchess of the finest class.

Like Higgins, Bernard shaw was a phonetician, and devoted a great amount of his time. This play is a hilarious critique of the silliness of the english language and the effect it has on the class of its speakers. It is out hope that this production of Pygmalion will dazzle and excite you. For more information about this play and our cast for 2023, please visit: https://dramabuzzsenior.co.za/2023.

The show itself is appropriate for all ages, though children under 10 might find it long and tedious. We recommend not bringing children under 10 unless you know that they will be able to sit throw and enjoy the show.

Play Synopsis

Pygmalion is a romance in five parts by George Bernard Shaw, produced in German in 1913 in Vienna. It was performed in England in 1914, with Mrs. Patrick Campbell as Eliza Doolittle. The play is a humane comedy about love and the English class system.

Henry Higgins, a phonetician, accepts a bet that simply by changing the speech of a Cockney flower seller he will be able, in six months, to pass her off as a duchess. Eliza undergoes grueling training. When she successfully “passes” in high society—having in the process become a lovely young woman of sensitivity and taste—Eliza realises that Higgins does not see her, but only what he has created. Coming to see that Higgins will never change and now being equipped to handle herself, Eliza confronts Higgins about her situation and questions what she is going to do next. Higgins is hurt by the encounter and the two part non-amiably. The next day, the two come to a head again as Higgins attempts to convince Eliza to return to the way things were during the experiment.
