Production description:

Imaginations

Of memories

Forged from the pixels

From the celluloid

From my cells

From smells and sensations that occur just off-screen

From the silences

From the shadows

From the spaces in-between

Stages, Screens, and In-betweens is an exhibition and performance by Nicola Pilkington, which probes the possibilities, frictions, and fissures between the memories stored in their family’s home videos and the memories stored in their body. Pilkington weaves sound, video, and storytelling to offer a bricolage of childhood remembrance about family, loneliness, and the haven of imaginary worlds.

The project is a culmination of Pilkington’s two-year MA research in Theatre and Performance at UCT. The exhibition and performance is the practical offering of their research into intermedial performance: a self-reflexive autoethnographic study into the frictions between embodied and recorded forms of memory.

The project was made in consultation with Jay Pather and Geoffrey Diver.
