Swing music and dancing first became popular in Harlem, New York in the 1930s – and experienced a wave of popularity with South African musicians in the 1950s, forming the roots of SA jazz culture. For decades, though, swing dancing wasn't really well known in the city...
In 2012, the modern swing dance scene as we know it in Cape Town was ignited by a bunch of enthusiastic individuals and "swing mama" Jeannie Elliott, who brought ten years of teaching experience from the USA. Since then, the joy and welcoming spirit of the Cape Town Swing scene has grown and made a name for itself in the international swing dance community. We're thrilled to see the community grow again: let's celebrate a decade of dancing!
