“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela
For the past few years, people throughout the world have been accustomed to the annual ritual of dedicating 67 minutes of their personal time on International Mandela Day, to giving back and reaching out to the less privileged and needy within our community and society. Throughout the years, we have seen more people from all corners of the world getting behind this initiative, and as the years have gone by, people have been presented with a wide variety of activities and charities that they can get behind or support on International Mandela Day.
67 Comics is a prominent International Nelson Mandela Day initiative that involves at least 67 Comedians from all over the world doing comedy to raise funds for charity organisations in their areas. The brainchild of comedy producer, Miss Nandipha Dubula, the 67 Comics Project aims to be an everyday project that raises funds for charity organizations world-wide. And it is and will always be rooted in Dr Nelson Mandela’s beliefs in how humans should go about living lives and caring for each other.
Nelson Mandela followed three rules throughout his life, which he did at great personal sacrifice:
1. Free yourself.
2. Free others.
3. Serve every day.
Service & volunteerism: Daily service to one's fellow man in whatever shape or form is an action each one of us can commit to. Madiba was the quintessential public servant. Let us emulate the servant leader by all becoming servant leaders ourselves and leading by example.
Case Studies of International Nelson Mandela Day by various organizations and individuals:
On July 28th 2013 the 67 Minutes of Laughter Project donated R15 000 to The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. The funds were raised through a sold out comedy show staged at The Auto and General Theatre at the Nelson Mandela Square. The show had South Africa’s Top Comedians like Kedibone Mulaudzi, Kagiso Lediga, Chris Forest, Jay Boogie, Ndumiso Lindi, Trevor Gumbi, Sifiso Nene, Loyiso Madinga and more. The show was produced by Kedibone Mulaudzi of PremiumComedySA.COM, Lu Mge of Omen Agency and Mr Napoleon Masinga of Napsta Entertainment.
In 26 June 2014, over 2 000 elderly members of a rural community in Hammanskraal, North West Province received a much-welcome winter gift – a thick blanket donated by the Al-Imdaad Foundation and personally handed over to them by Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council and grandson of the late Nelson Mandela. An initiative of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Al-Imdaad Foundation and the Chief himself, the blanket handover project represents Mandla Mandela's call to make every day a Mandela Day by helping those in your community in whatever way you can.
In July 29th 2015- The 67 Comics Project donated R10 000, non-perishable foods and clothes to the Protea Glen Orphanage in Soweto. The food and clothes were donations from the comedy fans that came to watch the show and also charitable individuals who wanted to make a difference. Protea Glen Orphanage is a registered NPO/ Child and Youth Care Centre situated in Protea Glen in Soweto. The home is currently registered to service the needs of Orphans from the ages of 1Day to 8 years. The home also offers direct and indirect services to needy families within the community.
In 2016, the 67 Comics project aims to raise funds in Cities throughout the world. We have currently secured comedians in these cities: Johannesburg, Durban, Lusaka, Gaborone, London, Los Angeles, Kampala, Maseru, Seattle, Washington DC, New York, New York, Mbabane, Texas, Kampala, Lagos, Nelspruit, Sydney, Harare and more cities in our first worldwide project to add more good to the world.
The shows will be streamed live on Facebook for anybody in the world to be able to watch. The funds made from gate takings will be donated to various charities throughout the world and people who will watch the shows online are encouraged to donate money, food and clothes to their local charities. The Maseru show will donate the funds to God’s Love Centre in Sekamaneng.
