ABOUT
American-Korean violinst Hana Yim-Wahl will be performing with Tobias Kruger (piano) and Walter Fourie (tenor) for a lovely midday concert. On the program will be a selection of works by Beethoven for violin, piano and voice, some Rachmaninoff, as well as lighter classical works. There will also be some gorgeous music from Irish and South African composers.
Hana moved to South Africa in 2007 after living in London for a period of time. Hana was born in Virginia, USA and has been playing the violin since the age of 11, studying primarily with Cindy Finks, of the National Symphony Orchestra. As a youth, she played with the American Youth Philharmonic under the direction of Luiz Haza and participated in master classes under the direction of Benjamin Zander and Leonard Slatkin. She was also given a prestigious placement with the National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship Program where she was afforded the opportunity to perform several times on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and learn from artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, and Hilary Hahn. After graduating high school she gained scholarships to study at James Madison University and the Royal College of Music in London. Through freelance work, Hana has also played with the Manasses Ballet Company, The Prince William Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Symphony Orchestra and several others.
While in South Africa, Hana joined the Barnyard Theatres as their first choice violinist performing in shows like Broadway Rocks, Route 66, and Roll Over Beethoven. She has traveled with this group to the Seychelles, Zimbabwe and the UAE. She is a regular visitor to Tanzania as a violinist in several corporate functions. Hana is currently a member of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and free lances with several others such as the JPO and JMI. She has traveled to the Kruger National Park and Mozambique most recently with the JFO. Being a member of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra has afforded her the chance to play with artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, and Dave Stewart to name a few.
Hana is one of the founding members of the Scullery Quintet. A crossover jazz/classical quintet with Waldo Luc Alexander, Tiisetso Mashishi, Peter Auret and Amaeshi Ikechi. This group has most recently played the Atterbury Klassiek in Pretoria, Wakkerstroom Music Festival and Woordfees in Stellenbosch to great feedback.
